Eulji-ro is located in the center of the old city center of Seoul. Eulji-ro used to be an industrial zone that represented Seoul in the past growth period. Small manufacturers are packed in narrow maze-like streets. However, the outskirts of Seoul have developed and the old city center has declined.
을지로는 서울 구 도심 중심의 공업지대였습니다. 작은 제조업체들이 모여들면서 예측할 수 없는 미로같은 골목길을 갖게되었습니다. 현대로 오면서 홍대,여의도,강남 등 서울의 외곽이 개발되었고, 을지로는 역사의 궤적같이 구비진 골목들을 가진채 쇠퇴하고 말았습니다.
Eulji-ro now combines old manufacturers, old restaurants, and millennials to create a harmony of old and new. I wanted to design a chair that symbolizes the unique look of this place.
최근에는 독특함을 찾아 오는 젊은 사람들과 제조업체의 사람들, 오래된 식당을 찾아오는 사람들이 뒤섞여 재밌는 조화를 이루고 있습니다. 산업디자인 학부 학생때 골목골목을 헤매던 추억을 가진 저는 을지로의 요즘 모습이 반가웠습니다.
The small old restaurants in the maze have two kinds of sitting culture. First, they sit together in front of the restaurant with cheap stool. I wanted to design a chair with the name of the region and the culture of the region together.
이 곳의 미로같은 골목과 그 때문에 생겨난 풍경이 있습니다. 바로 골목에 늘어선 빨간 파란 싸구려 플라스틱 스툴의 바다입니다. 좁은 식당과 좁은 골목에서 먹고 마시기 위해 식당들이 영업을 시작하면 골목이 플라스틱 스툴로 가득차게 됩니다.을지로에서 가장 많이 볼 수 있는 가구인 싸구려 플라스틱 스툴을 다시 디자인 해보는 것도 의미있다고 생각했습니다.
This stool is a harmonious stool for the outdoor in Eulji-ro. This is a stool where you can see two things that people in Eulji-ro like. You can overlap two stools or sit separately. The harmony of the old and new phrases is expressed in plastic with two materials.
사람들을 관찰했을 때, 스툴을 두개씩 쓰는 사람들을 발견할 수 있었습니다. 한쪽 스툴에 가방을 따로 올려놓기도 하고, 작은 스툴이 불편해 두개를 붙여놓고, 발을 올리거나 양반다리를 올리는 사람도 있었습니다. 저는 이런 플라스틱 스툴을 다양하게 쓰는 행태들이 재밌다고 생각했습니다.
이 스툴은 을지로의 골목에서 사용할 수 있는 스툴입니다. 을지로의 과거 제조업을 상징하는 유광의 플랫한 상판을 가진 투명 플라스틱 의자와 을지로에 현재 모여드는 젊은이를 상징하는 매트한 질감의 둥근 스툴 두 종류로 이뤄져 있습니다. 이 두 가지 스툴은 겹쳐놓으면 새로운 모습인 양반다리 스툴로 변합니다... 짐을 올려놓을 수도 있고 양반다리로 다양하게 자세를 바꿔가며 앉을 수도 있습니다. 여럿이서 스툴을 나눠 쓸수도 있고 합쳐서 사용할 수 도 있습니다. 이 스툴은 을지로의 골목 모습을 다양한 자세와 다양한 행태로 채워줄 것입니다.
